Bundoran all set for 2012 An Post Rás

In less than two weeks teams from around the world, including places as far away as Morocco and Taiwan, will line up for the start of the 2012 An Post Rás. This is the 60th anniversary of the famous race, and it has four stages passing through County Donegal including finishes in Bundoran, Buncrana, Killybegs and Donegal Town. Last year saw huge numbers cheering the riders along the route and at the stage finishes and this years Rás organiser, Dermot Dignam, is hoping to see similar crowds.

Leaving from Westport, Co. Mayo at 11am on Wednesday, May 23rd, the riders will embark on a relatively flat 135 kilometres of road to the stage finish at Bundoran and Dignam is expecting alot of action towards the end of this stage.

“This is a real sprinters day. It is 135 kilometres of flat roads through Charlestown and Sligo, and promises to be a great finish into Bundoran. The final run-in is straight and fast, with a slight rise to the line coming in the last four to five hundred metres. The stage ends on the bridge in Bundoran, with the beautiful backdrop of the Atlantic ocean behind.”

The following day’s fifth stage on Thursday, 24th, begins from Bundoran and is a complete contrast with seven climbs, one of which is generally regarded as being the toughest single ascent in Ireland.

The final stage in Donegal on Saturday, 26th is the penultimate day of the race and also the longest at 161 kilometres. It sets off from Donegal town on a considerably flat route and finishes at Cootehill,Co. Cavan.

The 8 day International cycling race takes place from May 20th to 27th and the emphasis will again be placed on national, regional and top level sponsored amateur cycling teams.

Irish surfer in running for top prize

Irish surfer Ollie O’Flaherty is in the running for one of big wave surfing’s most prestigious awards for his ride on a monster Co. Sligo wave last month.

O’Flaherty, who comes from Lahinch, Co Clare, has been nominated in the Biggest Wave category of the Billabong XXL 2012 contest for a wave he rode at Mullaghmore Head, just 10 minutes from Bundoran, on March 8th. The category carries a $15,000 prize.

O’Flaherty, who helps fund his surfing by giving lessons, said he was trying to get sponsorship to cover flights and accommodation so he can represent Ireland at the awards ceremony. The 24 year old surfer, who has suffered multiple injuries including a broken leg, a dislocated ankle and torn ligaments in pursuit of his passion, also believes the award would help boost Ireland’s reputation as an international surf destination.

Devon-based surfer Andrew Cotton was also nominated for a wave he caught at Mullaghmore on the same day.

The winners will be announced at the Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards party at the Grove Theatre in Anaheim, California on May 4th.

RTÉ Come to Bundoran

Diarmuid Gavin is coming with RTÉ to film in Bundoran on the weekend of April 14th. They are coming as part of a project to tidy up the town which will be featured on RTE’s popular show “Dirty Old Towns”.  The idea came about when Diarmuid, who hosts the show, was looking for a beach cleanup that could be done in the weekend challenge portion of the show. Bundoran, as the premier seaside resort in Ireland, was an obvious choice. The Bundoran Tidy Towns Group Spring Clean in Association with An Taisce was already planned for Saturday April 14th when RTÉ’s Weekend Challenge sought the group out. The projects that are being filmed include two outdoor surf art projects which will be located on the main street, a beach cleanup and litter pick, residential cleanups by people in the area, paintings of the West End playground walls, and the west end boat quay. TV cameras will be rolling in Bundoran on Saturday 14th April and the group is encouraging people to get involved in any way they can.  Everyone invited, don’t come empty handed. Bring your paintbrush, paint tray, some gloves and some good spirit. The group want to use the project to show that Bundoran is a great place to live as well as visit and we look forward to seeing you there.

Irish surfer raises money for charity

A world beating surfer has completed a marathon challenge by dodging tankers, trawlers and an oil rig to paddle from Northern Ireland to Scotland.

Al Mennie, who has ridden some of the largest waves on record, struggled through fierce currents, over 30 miles of sea for nine hours and 25 minutes, before reaching land on the Isle of Islay in Scotland.

The big wave surfer set off from the Giant’s Causeway in the dark at 6.30 on Tuesday morning.

“When I got to the rocks I lay down for five minutes and said to myself ‘right, you are not getting out of the water until you get to Islay’,” he said.

“But it was really tough, tougher than I expected. It was very demotivating at times.”

“The final stretch of three miles was the toughest. I could see the cliffs but the current wouldn’t let me get to them. Then when I finally broke through, the current sucked me westerly and almost sent me past the end of the island.”

In training, Mennie had paddled 23 miles in the space of five hours. Blessed with good weather but rough seas, the journey along the edge of the North Channel and North Atlantic saw him complete the first 12 miles at an average speed of four mph before he ran into trouble.

“It was like hitting a brick wall. Hours four to seven all blended together and I covered very little distance as the currents and tides tried to stop me. My speed dropped to 1.6mph on average at times due to the currents coming at me from different directions,” he said. “I was passed by a Danish tanker, several commercial trawlers and an oil rig.”

Mennie’s successful voyage can now go alongside his other surfing exploits which have seen him ride record breaking waves around the world and negotiating huge breakers up to 90ft high.

The charity endurance test raised money for the Northern Ireland Chest Heart and Stroke organisation.

Best surfing conditions for March in 15 years

To the joy of surfers an extreme weather system, nicknamed the “Viking storm”, has generated some of the largest springtime rollers off the northwest coast in recent years with one surfer catching a 50ft wave off Mullaghmore, just 15 minutes from Bundoran.

Surfers from around the world were attracted by the huge waves with many coming from Europe as well as from regions as far away as Hawaii, Brazil, Australia and South Africa.  The surfers were accompanied by two rescue boats and were watched by hundreds of people on the Mullaghmore headland. It was estimated that these were the best surfing conditions during the month of March for 15 years in this area. It has also been said that these are the biggest waves ever to hit Ireland.

The storm originated off Greenland, hence the nickname the “Viking storm”.

Bundoran surfer Richie Fitzgerald, said that a particularly low tide on Thursday contributed to a “huge, unruly and very dangerous” swell. He also described some “incredible rides, some horrendous wipeouts, broken ribs, some bruised muscles, lost boards, broken boards, shifting wind, massive boils, cross waves, super shallow sections”, during an exciting session on the water.

Images from the Mullaghmore session have been quickly entered into the XXL Biggest Wave competition. The Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards event is the most important and prestigious ceremony that recognizes the most daring and death defying surfers in the World. It includes awards for everything from best paddle-in to best wave award. The most coveted award is for the Ride of the Year for which the recipient will win $50,000 dollars. Andrew Cotton (UK) has entered into the Ride of the Year category for his wave riding in Mullaghmore.

French lose the accent of love… as the Irish lilt is voted world’s sexiest

It’s official, Irish people have the best accent in the world. When of the many reasons to come visit..

There was a time when a Frenchman only had to order a pint of beer and women would collapse at his feet with desire.

Well those days, they are, ‘ow you say, fini!

The Irish accent was yesterday voted the world’s sexiest – knocking the Gauls off the top spot they’ve held for decades.

Helped by the likes of Colin Farrell, the Irish accent has knocjked the French off the top spot, no doubt to the dismay of Nicolas Sarkozy

Men with an Emerald Isle brogue, as promoted by stars like Colin Farrell and James Nesbitt, came top in a poll of 5,000 women worldwide.

The fall from grace of the French accent was laid firmly at the feet of president Nicolas Sarkozy, who has been accused of giving his countrymen a bad name by leering at women while married to Carla Bruni.

The Italian accent was deemed to be second most sexy followed by Scottish. The French only managed to limp into fourth place, just ahead of Australian. English was sixth.

Nail biting 20 ft + waves at Mullaghmore

MULLAGHMORE went for broke during a gap between two storm systems on Monday, December 12th.

A morning’s perfection rolled into a stormforce afternoon but not before allowing a thrills-and-spills tow and paddle session in the teeth of winter.

Local surfer Richie Fitzgerald said “what a day, it had it all, we all agree it was some of the hollowest nastiest 20ft plus barrels we have ever had out there”.

Some interesting facts about Donegal

Donegal often called the “forgotten county?” is one of Ireland’s most beautiful counties.  We have put together some interesting facts for anyone visiting the area.

Donegal is situated in the north-west of Ireland and is surrounded by 5 counties  including Sligo, Leitrim,  Derry, Tyrone and Fermanagh making it a perfect platform to explore some hidden beauties.

The County has six hundred and fifty kilometres of rugged coastline and sandy beaches to explore

Tory Island off of Donegal has a King. This is a unique tradition that does not exist anywhere else in Ireland. The current Rí Thoraí (Irish for King of Tory) is painter Patsaí Dan Mac Ruaidhrí (Patsy Dan Rodgers in English). The king has no formal powers; though duties include being a spokesperson for the island community and welcoming people to the island. The total population of the Island is under 200.

Donegal has the second-largest Gaeltacht(where Irish is the first language) area in the whole of Ireland

Some famous people that have hailed from Donegal include the world famour singer Enya, the renowned trad group Clannad, country and western crooner Daniel O Donnnell, rock legend Rory Gallagher and for those of literary interest the poet William Allingham.

All in all Donegal is a great place to visit while on holidays in Ireland

Local Surf Breaks

Donegal Language School is ideally situated for access to the numerous surf spots in and around Bundoran. The world famous “Peak” is just a 5 minute walk away, providing the most consistent and best quality surf in Ireland (experienced surfers only!) For beginners and intermediates there is Main Beach and Tullan Strand. There are also Rossnowlagh, Streedagh and Strandhill just a short drive away.

Here is some further information on  some of our most popular breaks

Tullan Strand
Tullan strand is one of the best beaches in Ireland for surfing, as it catches a lot of swell.  Even if there are no waves at other breaks, Tullan can still be two foot and clean.  The beach is two miles long with banks all along the beach, the most
popular of which is beside the cliffs. At low tide the peaks nearest the cliff jack up into wedges that can produce fast hollow waves. The peaks get mellower the further down the beach you go. At high tide the peaks at the far end of the beach are best.
Offshore in east and southeast winds.

Rossnowlagh Beach
Home to the annual Intercounties contest Rossnowlagh is best surfed on a mid to high tide, and has plenty of space all along the beach to accommodate any number of surfers. The waves here tend to be more mellow than Bundoran, so it is a good option if Tullan is big. Good conditions for learning. Rossnowlagh also picks up south swell. Offshore in east and south east winds. Located 15 minutes from Bundoran

The Peak
One of the most consistent and best quality reef breaks in Ireland, the Peak is best surfed at low tide.  This A-frame wave produces a long walling left with barrel sections, and a shorter right that can be quite hollow.  Experienced surfers only.  Can get crowded.   Offshore in SE winds. When the swell is big the left can close out however the right can handle nearly any swell.

Inside left
Just to the north of the peak is the inside left. On good days its offers a long left with barrel sections. Can be fickle but when its on its definitely on.

 Main Beach Sand bar
The Sandbar can produce high quality lefts and short rights at low tide. The sand bar is rarely crowded and is a good spot for intermediate riders. It is best on a low tide and can really catch south west swell.

Bundoran Main Beach
The main beach can produce good waves on a high tide with a medium to large swell. The shore break produces fast short rides in the shore break but can also produce longer rides when it breaks out back. It can handle the wind and is worth a look at high tide.

Boat Quay

The Boat Quay can produce long fast lefts in big swells. Can be sketchy when the tide is low but is often empty. Needs big swell. Best at mid to high.

The Drowes River Mouth
On biggers swells mellow lefts and rights peel off at the mouth of the Drowes River. A good intermediate wave. Located between Bundoran and Tullaghan at the Drowes Bridge.

 Mullaghmore Beach
Only really has waves on huge swells, however is protected from West and south west winds. The further down the beach you go the bigger the swell but the more wind affected it becomes. To reach Mullaghmore head to Sligo and turn to the right a half mile after the Duff River bridge. Good banks when on.

 Streedagh Strand, Grange, Co. Sligo
Streedagh is a north facing beach located midway between Bundoran and Sligo (turn off at Grange village). Best surfed on a mid to high tide it is somewhat sheltered from west winds, and is clean in a southwest wind. Picks up plenty of west and north swell. Can be quite punchy on a big swell. Good for intermediate level surfers. Plenty of empty peaks all along the beach, and bigger further down the beach.

3D
A rock ledge that can produce sketchy barrels with a high tide. The movement of the sand bar seems to have effected 3D in recent years however its still possible with a high tide to get barreled. Probably best for body boarders.

Testimonials

(A lovely testimonial from an Italian parent who sent her daughter three times to us)

In quel periodo poi l’ aeroporto ospita prevalentemente italiani in viaggio studio, e in particolare vacanze equestri.

Hi Gina

Dear Gina,

I only want to tell you that Mar and Xabi arrived perfectly to Tenerife last Saturday. They said that they had a very good time at the school (including the English, surfing and everything around these two activities).

Mar and Xabi, English and Surfing, August 2011
